As someone directly related to action sports filming and production, it seems as though the monopolizing ‘Death Star’ is almost complete. At risk of revealing the geeky-ness which still prevents me from getting a date, I liken this move to Episode 3 of Star Wars. You know, right before the Emperor wins and turns Anakin into Darth Vadar? It seems like the evil plan to save the world is moving into place. I’d like to think that there will be another distributor out there stepping up to the plate so to speak, in order to give producers the opportunity to benefit from the long seasons of filming, the long hours, and the blood, sweat, and tears poured into these projects. If one distributor holds a monopoly of sorts, producers wont be able to shop their projects around seeking out the best deal possible–especially if that monopolizing entity doesn’t necessarily focus on the sport pertaining to that producer. If all the films out there now are available in one place, ie., skate, snow, wake, soap shoe, bike, yoga, broomball, rockclimbing, jazzercise, kiteboarding, etc., the good films from the sports we REALLY all love get lost in the mix. I don’t know… I apologize for the rant, I’m going snowboarding–something we should all be doing anyway. It’s fun.

The Star Wars analogy may be a bit much, but, if they sold “millions of units” in 3 years why wouldn’t they keep on doing it? This whole thing reeks…

Understanding that the Star Wars analogy might be a bit much… it just seems that producers are the ones losing in this whole thing. Millions of units might have been sold, but of what? how does that break down per discipline? Street Racing and Wrestling might have killed it, taking the focus away from Skateboarding, Snowboarding, and the films that provide the backbone of our lively-hood.

well if millions have been sold….then producers should wonder weather they were reported millions or not during those years….will more big checks be handed ??… they were just in the hundred anyway…not the millions…as for digital exclusively with one company….whoaw…pirate bay and torrent’s of all kind have happy days ahead :)

As a filmmaker/producer I have to say VAS is one of the only companies that actually pays you as agreed and gets your video where they say they will. They are big and that’s the point. We’re all trying to get as many people to see our vids as possible. And hey Volcom is sold in nordstrom and is a public company. Making money isn’t a bad thing. VAS offered us way more than anyone else because they know they can make a lot more money on our film and for us. Its bizness.

VAS used to suck when that idiot jeff was running it, it seems like the new people at VAS have a better grasp in getting our product out to the marketplace. i have gotten paid more from then and in a timely fashion than any other distributor to date. good for vas and sportnet.
