Tony Hawk wins another vert competition, who would have thought? The Sonic Generations of Skate contest at Clash at Clairemont 7 showcased the worlds best halfpipe skaters from varying generations throwing down in support of Grind for Life and the Mission Valley YMCA. The winning team of Hawk, Macdonald and Brusco donated their prize money to the National Cancer Organization founded by pro skater and two-time cancer survivor Mike Rogers.

San Diego, Calif. (June 1, 2013) – A jam-packed venue of spectators attended the Sonic Generations of Skate contest at Clash at Clairemont 7 to watch the top half-pipe skaters in the world throw down their biggest tricks in a unique team contest in support of Grind for Life and The Mission Valley YMCA. Although all of the skaters impressed the crowd on the largest vert ramp on the west coast, the day belonged to the reigning champs on a team that included the legendary Tony Hawk, 22-time X Games medalist Andy Macdonald and the young prodigy, Mitchie Brusco, who recently added his third X Games medal in Barcelona—all of whom donated their prize money to Grind for Life.

The event featured four contests: individual runs, high air, best trick and team triples, where each pro competed against their own generation for team points. Each of the four teams were comprised of three athletes from different generations of vert skating. Every individual pushed the level of progression with stylish kickflips to aerials, smooth and fast transitions and more. Team Black had an edge over their competitors in the team triples contest, with spot on synchronization in their routine. Hawk, Macdonald and Brusco launched huge amplitude out of the vert, stuck multiple triple 540s and simultaneous carves, front side air and backside airs throughout the contest.

The Sonic Generations of Skate teams resulted in the following order:

  • 1st Place: Team Black – Tony Hawk, Andy Macdonald Mitchie Brusco
  • 2nd Place: Team Purple – Kevin Staab, Bucky Lasek, Marcelo Bastos
  • 3rd Place: Team Yellow: Mike McGill, Pierre Luc Gagnon, Jimmy Wilkins
  • 4th Place: Team Red: Sergie Ventura, Lincoln Ueda, Adam Taylor

“Clash for Clairemont is an annual fundraiser for Grind for Life that supports cancer patients with a focus on action sports, specifically skateboarding. Today’s Sonic Generations of Skate competition was a lot of fun, and it was great to take part in a competition in San Diego – my hometown,” said Hawk.

“This seventh annual event highlighted an all-time brotherhood of skateboarding where all the pros came together for a great cause to help fundraise for travel and other expenses that insurance doesn’t cover for those going through cancer,” said Mike Rogers, founder, Grind for Life. “This year was the best turn-out ever. The Sonic Generations of Skate competition was a great addition to the Clash at Clairemont. The kids were stoked on the Triples and the variety of runs put together by the different generations of pros.”
