Snowboard Gear Sales Drop 17% Through December

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but snowboard gear sales have been off to a rough start this season. Through December, SIA reports that units sold are down 16%, dollars down 17%, inventory levels are up, and margins of in-season gear are off more than 2%.

Here’s an in-depth look at the sales stats and retail trends shaping the industry through December:

Let's start with inventory. In-season gear is up nearly 6% and carry-over, the back-room bain of your shop, is up 140%.

But all is not doom and gloom. Snow levels are up considerably from last year’s abismal levels, sales picked up in January anecdotally, and the industry is focusing its collective will on figuring out ways to grow the sport in a responsible way. Another positive stat has been the strong sell through of alternative shapes, backcountry-focused gear, and in particular, splitboards. Although still a small category with 2,300 units sold through December, splitboards are up 33% ┬áin units sold and 19% in dollars sold.

Stay tuned for more as we investigate the future of the sport and dive deep into the topic at this year’s TransWorld Snow Conference.
