X Games Aspen 2013 Kicks Off First Event Of Global Expansion

X Games Aspen 2013 has kicked off the first event of its global expansion, with Shaun White and Kelly Clark among the first wave of athlete invites. The press release follows:

ESPN will launch into 2013 with X Games Aspen officially kicking off the global expansion – a six-event schedule that will conclude in Los Angeles in August. In May, ESPN announced it would be expanding the X Games to Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil; Munich, Germany and Barcelona, Spain – joining X Games Aspen, Los Angeles and Tignes taking the premier action sports event global.

ESPN will present X Games Aspen 2013 from January 24 – 27 bringing all the action back to Buttermilk Mountain for an 11th consecutive year. Celebrating 17 years of the winter version of X Games, this year’s competition will feature more than 200 athletes competing for medals and prize money in the sports of Skiing, Snowboard and Snowmobile. ESPN and ABC will combine to televise 20 hours of live X Games Aspen competition in high definition. In addition, the Worldwide Leader in Action Sports will present all the X Games action on ESPN 3D.

The first wave of invited athletes include: 

· Bobby Brown – The first skier to win two gold medals at the same event in 2010, Brown is back atop the Big Air podium in 2012, and one of only a few skiers to land a triple cork. 

· Kelly Clark – The first female snowboarder to land a 1080 in competition, Clark made history last season by becoming the first female to repeat gold in the Snowboard SuperPipe competition 

· Tucker Hibbert – The most decorated SnoCross racer in X Games history and 2012 FIM Snocross World Champion, Hibbert is going for the first-ever six-peat at an X Games winter event and still holds the record for youngest athlete to ever win gold at winter when he accomplished this in 2000 at the age of 15.

· Mark McMorris – The first snowboarder to land the triple cork in competition, McMorris became a sensation at Winter X Games Aspen 2012, winning gold in Slopestyle and Big Air. McMorris was also named the Jeep Athlete of the Games.

· Shaun White – The first snowboarder to five-peat in SuperPipe, White raised the bar even higher with a perfect-scoring run en route to gold. In his first X Games Tignes appearance in 2012, White won gold in both Snowboard SuperPipe and Slopestyle.
